Lesson 8

Key Signatures

One thing that makes chords and reading music easier to learn and play is knowing key signatures.

Music has keys and what that means in piano is that sometimes we need to play a black note instead of a white note. These are called sharps or flats.

Key signatures tell you how many sharps or flats to play in a given key. If you can learn them, you can figure out any chord.

Key signatures are also an essential part of playing and reading music.

If you are interested in playing with a band at some point, make sure you understand the keys of C, G, D, E, A. Guitar players like to play in those keys. (Flat keys are difficult for them.)

Next lesson: understanding chord titles.
